This is an uncommon, transatlantic, double-rated, stampless business cover(has some staining, but only minor wear and tear) with a 1-page letter requesting a monthly report on the financial state of the affairs of the addressee's company, the New York Central Railroad Company! It was sent by someone with the well-known, American-owned firm of George Peabody & Company on March 16, 1861, from London(a fine strike of the CDS, and red, auxiliary marking!), England, to Gilbert L. Wilson, Treasurer, Albany, New York, US! The mail was taken by the British Cunard steamship, Africa, for 48-Cents U.S.=2-Shillings! The mail arrived in New York on March 31, 1861(a pretty nice, black, "New York-Br. Pkt. 48" CDS! It looks like the amount of 38-Cents, U.S.(written in pencil), was due to the sender and the Cunard Company. The mail was replied to on April 1, 1861. Noted imperfections aside, this cover remains an interesting piece of stampless, transatlantic mail related to the railway industry sent in Spring 1861!
