Up for sale a 6” tall 1986 South African hand-thrown stoneware brown
pitcher/jug.
In Mint Pre-Owned Condition. No chips, cracks or damage.
This pitcher is an excellent example of South African
studio pottery from the famous Rorke's Drift ELC (Evangelical Lutheran Church)
Art and Craft Centre, located in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
Featuring traditional patterns, folklore, and stylized
animal forms that mirror the prehistoric cave paintings found throughout
Southern Africa, it reflects strong Zulu design influences combined with
mid-century studio pottery techniques introduced by Scandinavian instructors
who helped establish the workshop in the 1960s.
The Mbatha surname is common among Rorke’s Drift potters. I
can’t read the first name clearly, but it appears to be Eaval.
