The original gold foil sticker on the back reads:  

西山忠男考案 PAT. 563302  

Translation: “Designed and Invented by Tadao Nishiyama, Patent No. 563302”

This sticker is your guarantee. It means this Korobokkuru is a genuine, patented piece from the artist himself. Nishiyama’s workshop is closed. No more are being made. Pieces with the intact sticker and hemp hair are now rare.

The Story Behind the Spirit  

The Ainu, Japan’s indigenous people, believed the Korobokkuru lived quietly under giant fuki butterbur leaves. Small, shy, and kind. They’d help humans who respected the forest, then vanish. Having one in your home invites their blessing.

• Artist: Tadao Nishiyama, Showa period. • Height: 12cm / 4.7 inches. Great presence for a shelf, desk, or kamidana. • Materials: Solid dark-stained wood with deep chisel marks. Real hemp fiber topknot, fully intact. Hand-painted gold “Moreu” protection spirals on shoulders. • Expression: Wide, startled eyes. The moment a shy spirit realizes you’ve seen him. This is Nishiyama’s signature. 

Condition  

Excellent vintage. Hemp hair complete. Light age wear only. The tool marks and wood grain are the point. This is Mingei — art made by human hands for everyday life.
