The Free City of Danzig (German: *Freie Stadt Danzig*) was an autonomous city-state that existed during the interwar period under the protection of the League of Nations. Its establishment was a consequence of the German Empire's defeat in World War I and one of the provisions of the Treaty of Versailles (1919) regarding the demarcation of the Polish-German border. The creation of the Free City of Danzig was a compromise that satisfied neither the Poles nor the Germans.
