The epithet viridis means 'green', referring to the distinctively green-coloured flowers — unusual among flowering plants and especially striking in the Codonopsis genus, which more commonly produces blue or violet flowers. The genus Codonopsis encompasses beautiful Asian bell-flowered climbers whose inner floral markings (often exquisite, complex patterns of purple, orange and brown) are only visible when looking inside the bell.
