Boswellia sacra SEEDS - True Frankincense

Boswellia sacra seeds grow into the most celebrated of all frankincense trees — the sacred Boswellia of the Arabian Peninsula, native to the Dhofar region of Oman and southern Yemen, with populations also in north-western Somalia. This is the primary source of the finest Arabian frankincense (luban) — the resin tapped for millennia and traded across the ancient world via the Incense Road. The tree develops a gnarled, stout trunk with distinctive peeling, papery bark, spreading branches and compound leaves, and produces an oleo-gum resin of exceptional fragrance when the bark is incised.

Boswellia sacra grows in the harsh, fog-irrigated limestone mountains of Dhofar at altitude, where seasonal monsoon moisture sustains these trees in an otherwise arid landscape. It is slow-growing in cultivation but develops extraordinary character with age. Full sun, very sharp drainage, a mineral substrate and restrained watering replicate its rocky, seasonally dry habitat.
