The epithet aquilega means 'eagle-bearing' or 'like an eagle's claw', possibly referring to the hooked spines on the leaf margins. An epiphytic or occasionally lithophytic bromeliad, it forms the characteristic stiff-leaved rosette that creates a central water-holding tank. Produces striking, long-lasting inflorescences with red and yellow bracts typical of the genus. Known in parts of its range as 'wild pineapple' for its resemblance to the cultivated pineapple.
