For sale are two rare, framed A3 photographs capturing the dramatic events of the SS Alba shipwreck near St Ives, Cornwall, in January 1938. These images were taken by the esteemed Richard Bros of Penzance, renowned for documenting maritime events along the Cornish coast.

Historical Context:

On 31 January 1938, the Panamanian steamship SS Alba encountered severe weather while en route from Barry, Wales, to Civitavecchia, Italy. Seeking refuge, Captain Joseph Horvath mistook the lights of Porthmeor for St Ives and ran aground on the Three Brothers Rocks near Porthmeor Beach. The St Ives RNLI lifeboat, Caroline Parsons, launched a rescue operation in treacherous conditions, successfully rescuing all 23 crew members from the Alba. However, during the return journey, a massive wave capsized the lifeboat. While the lifeboat self-righted, five of the Alba’s crew tragically drowned. The lifeboat was ultimately wrecked on the rocks.

This incident is a poignant chapter in the annals of the RNLI, highlighting both the bravery and the risks faced by lifeboat crews.
