Bernard Kay Abstract Etching & Copper Printing Plate 1954

This is an abstract etching along with the original copper printing plate by the British artist Bernard Kay.

It is signed and dated 1955. The size of the image is 122 x 80 mm / 4.8 x 3.2 inches and the size including the white border is 328 x 248 mm / 12.9 x 9.8 inches.

Bernard Kay was a painter, printmaker and teacher and was born in Southport, Lancashire in 1927. He attended Liverpool College of Art from 1943 to 1946; The Royal Academy Schools from 1947 to 1948 then gained a French Government Scholarship with Johnny Friedlaender, Atelier Friedlaender and Academy Ranson all 1954 and 1955.

Johnny Friedlaender (1912 to 1992) was a leading 20th century French/German artist who was a pioneer of the aquatint etching process and was influential on other notable artists including Kay.


He
exhibited with Roland, Browse and Delbanco from 1957 to 1970, having solo shows in 1960 and again in 1962.

Paintings and prints by Kay are held by The Print Club of Philadelphia (International Purchase Prize); Museum of Modern Art, New York; Victoria & Albert Museum; Seattle Museum of Modern Art and the British Council amongst other public collections.
