This cabbage palm hails from New Zealand, where it can reach heights of up to 35 feet and widths of 20 feet. In colder areas like Chicago, it’s typically grown as an annual or kept in a pot and moved to a warm, sunny location for the winter.

The name Cordyline is derived from a Greek word that refers to the large tap root or rhizomes, while australis comes from Latin meaning ‘southern’.

Cordyline australis can bounce back from fire thanks to its large underground rhizome or tap root. Once the fire is out, it will begin to regrow!

Cordyline australis is one of the most cultivated plants in New Zealand. It's quite popular in cooler, oceanic areas around the world because it resembles palm trees but is better suited for these climates.

The leaves are rich in strong fiber and are used in New Zealand to create paper, twine, cloth, and baskets.

Sowing instructions:
· Soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours.
· Plant the seeds 3/4" deep in soil that’s between 61-64° F, and make sure to keep it moist.
Use a standard well-draining potting mix. · If the conditions are dry, maintain humidity by misting occasionally.
