Introducing the original mix of the classic stereo soundboard, a symbol of NIRVANA itself...or even of the era. This "icon" is a leaked stereo soundboard from the Paramount Theater performance on October 31, 1991, shortly after the release of "NEVERMIND." This legendary recording has long been a staple, and was even released on official DVD/BD in 2011. While you've likely experienced this live performance in some form, this release represents its original and ultimate form.
This is the "complete original mix" by renowned engineer Andy Wallace. Andy rose to prominence in the late '80s, working on numerous classic albums. He first came into the spotlight with Aerosmith & Run-D.M.C.'s "Walk This Way," but his other credits include Jeff Beck, The Cult, Slayer, Rage Against the Machine, White Zombie, Jeff Buckley, Soul Asylum, Sepultura, Faith No More, Limp Bizkit, Foo Fighters, Alice in Chains, Guns N' Roses, Rush, and many more. It's no exaggeration to say that this list is the history of rock music since the '90s. Andy's signature work is the iconic album "Nevermind." Together with Nirvana, he created the grunge sound, making him a "true originator" who ushered in a new era.
Andy also mixed the legendary Seattle show, but the complete version was never released. It was only used in bits and pieces in promotional materials, singles, compilations, etc. at the time, and when it was released on DVD in 2011, it was somehow remixed, resulting in a flat, monotonous sound that crushed the original dynamics and impact with a roller. Naturally, enthusiasts who knew the "real sound" from the promos and compilations lamented this plight and sought out the "real complete version." This work is the culmination of that exploration and passion.
The largest collection of Andy Wallace mixes was the Geffen promo cassette from that time, "LIVE CONCERT 10-31-1991 SEATTLE." Extremely rare from 25 years ago, it has been meticulously digitized by an enthusiast who managed to acquire this excellent condition example. Utilizing five tracks from the rare promo CD "NEVERMIND, IT'S AN INTERVIEW," as well as snippets from the single "LITHIUM" and the compilation album "FROM THE MUDDY BANKS OF THE WISHKAH," this truly complete release has finally been realized. Of course, it's not simply a case of "scrambling and splicing." The finishing touches are imbued with a deep, enthusiastic spirit, meticulously adjusting the varying volume, sound pressure, and nuances of each item without losing even a trace of Andy's sound, making the joins completely imperceptible. As a result, it's the longest version, surpassing even the official DVD by about three minutes.
The sound is completely different from anything previously released. It's full of ups and downs far beyond the flimsy official DVD, and is far more vivid and dynamic. Andy's signature, sticky drum sound creates a thick, groove-like quality that's so striking it's as if the performance itself is completely different. Though it's a live recording, Andy's mix is delicate, bold, and uncompromising. The distorted guitar is rough, yet crisp and dramatic, and even the vocal effects are meticulously tuned. The tone and sensibility are unmistakably those of "NEVERMIND." As the originator who created this iconic album together with NIRVANA, he deeply understands the essence of the songs themselves and brings out their full potential.
As such a famous, historic live performance, it would be uncouth to smear the performance with words. I won't say anything. This release contains the "real" version of this masterpiece, the "complete version" by Andy Wallace, a key figure in "NEVERMIND." A live album of the same value and even on the same level as the iconic album that changed the world. Get your hands on this album of the century this weekend.
