Item : BOB DYLAN WITH TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS - MADISON SQUARE GARDEN 1986 FINAL NIGHT(3CD)

Condition :  NEW

Madison Square Garden, New York City, NY. USA, July 17, 1986 PERFECT SOUND

Up until now, Bob Dylan's live recordings have primarily been released from the 1970s and the late 1980s to early 1990s. This time, however, two live recordings from previously unreleased decades are being simultaneously released. First, 1986 in the US. That year, Dylan embarked on a major tour through the summer, backed by Tom Petty and his band, the Heartbreakers. He even performed in Japan in March, generating significant buzz.

However, the '86 tour itself is now being overlooked. This is because, starting the following year, Dylan began to make significant changes to his setlists and actively included songs he had never performed live before, making the '86 tour seem rather static. Perhaps even more importantly, Dylan himself admitted in his autobiography that it was a time when he "lost his motivation and considered retirement."

As he mentioned in his autobiography, the Heartbreakers' performance on the summer US tour was in top form, and their reliable support for Dylan was truly impressive. However, Dylan himself testified that he began to lose confidence as the '86 tour progressed and seriously considered retirement.

Perhaps because of this, Dylan incorporated a large number of cover songs, mixing old and new, during the '86 tour, which also reflected his reluctance to sing his own songs. While Dylan's performances in Japan conveyed a certain level of commitment, it's true that during the heavily publicized summer US tour, there were some shows that simply seemed to be going through the schedule. There are many soundboard recordings of the '86 US tour, but these performances highlight Dylan's unparalleled vocal poise, and as such, they are not highly acclaimed, considering they are SBDs.

Although the '86 US tour was something of a slump, there was one period that stood out as particularly brilliant. That was the July performance at Madison Square Garden, which will be released on this limited press CD. New York, where MSG is located, is where Dylan left Minneapolis in search of success and began his career. It's also where he recorded many albums, making it a base for Dylan. And it's no wonder he's pumped for a live performance at MSG.

There were three MSG gigs in 1986, and all three are considered by fans to be outstanding shows of the 1986 US tour. Dylan's upbeat attitude was evident from the first day, July 15, when he shouted, "I love you, New York!" The third and final day, July 1, was not only the longest of the three shows, but also shone as an exceptionally upbeat one.

Indeed, Dylan was incredibly energetic from the opening, singing with great energy. He delivered emotional covers of "We Three," a repertoire that began with the band's Japan tour and frequently performed in the US in 1986, and "We Had It All," a familiar version sung by Stones enthusiasts, sung with great emotion. Just listening to these recordings will convey a passion that easily blows away any run-of-the-mill '86 recordings.

Meanwhile, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' parts are in top form, and the venue is thriving. Dylan's solo acoustic parts on this day are also powerful, with "Mr. Tambourine Man" being a particularly impressive performance.

The sound quality of the audience recording capturing this incredible show is also superb. The rich presence, greater than the soundboard-like proximity of the sound image, and the outstanding clarity bring the exciting night to life. Dylan's voice is captured so vividly in the acoustic parts mentioned above, further highlighting the brilliance of the performance and singing.

Because this is such a rich recording in both sound quality and performance, the LP "WITH A ROLLING STONE" was released in the past, conveying to enthusiasts the great performance of MSG's third day, but it has never been released on CD. Of the three days, only the second was released under the title "CLEAN GUT GIG."

This situation is likely due solely to the fact that the recordings are rare and not widely available. In fact, no recordings have appeared online in nearly a decade. We were able to obtain these rare audience recordings. We've preserved the original sound while adjusting the pitch and removing noise to create the best possible sound.

As for the three MSG days, Ron Wood made surprise appearances on each day, starting with "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35" in the middle of the show, and many photos of him remain. While he wasn't particularly prominent (as was the case at Hyde Park in 1996), his presence on this day is clearly visible as he introduced Dylan during the band introductions, exciting the crowd. This is why the LP mentioned earlier was titled "WITH A ROLLING STONE."

What's appealing about this incredibly fun show is the surprise ending of "House of the Rising Sun," from Petty's first album (perhaps better known for The Animals than Dylan). And, in light of the recent news of Chuck Berry's passing, Petty and the Heartbreakers' cover of "Bye Bye Johnny" is also not to be missed. After this intense, three-disc show, rare bonus performances from Philadelphia and Kansas City are included. Among them are the first live performance of the local song "Kansas City" and the only performance of "Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat" from 1986. However, the Dylan heard on these discs is a completely different person from the fiery atmosphere he displayed at MSG. Furthermore, the bonus tracks are all excellent audience recordings, making the difference in intensity even more apparent. The performances in the main MSG section are so intense that the difference is clearly noticeable. This legendary day on the 1986 tour, when Dylan was at his most upbeat, is finally being released on CD!
