Antique c1860 Gothic Revival Gilded Brass Stationery Box with Malachite Cabochons

A magnificent and highly decorative Gothic Revival stationery box, dating to around the 1860s, crafted in richly gilded brass with an impressive level of Victorian craftsmanship. The exterior is finished in a soft powdered-gold gilding, lending a warm, understated sheen that accentuates the sharply defined edges and high-quality construction typical of early Victorian luxury desk objects. The ornamentation is bold and architectural, featuring cast brass tracery, scrolling foliate motifs, and medieval-inspired detailing that exemplifies the Gothic Revival movement at its height.

One of the most striking features of this box is the use of inset cabochons. Most are polished malachite stones, displaying the gemstone’s distinctive green banding and depth of colour. These are arranged in decorative cross-like patterns on both the domed lid and the front façade, creating a strong visual focal point. A single cabochon at the lower centre differs from the others, showing a pink and cream mottled appearance with a matte, unpolished finish—possibly an early pink-hued ornamental stone such as rhodonite or similar, providing an intriguing contrast within the overall design.

The interior retains its original luxury fittings. The inside lid is lined with gathered royal blue silk, still vibrant and eye-catching. The main compartment contains its original stationery fittings: an early stiff card framework covered in bright white cotton or silk-twill fabric with a subtle wave-grain texture. Red leather trims the upper edges and sides of the partitions, providing a fine decorative accent. The arrangement includes a long rear compartment for papers and several smaller front divisions designed to hold envelopes, notes, and assorted writing accessories. The interior remains clean and in remarkably good condition with very light wear.

The condition throughout is appealingly original, showing only gentle rubbing and minor surface markings to the gilt brass, entirely consistent with careful use over more than 160 years. The malachite stones remain secure and well-presented, and the box retains a wonderful presence as both a functional writing accessory and a decorative display piece.

A rare and desirable example of mid-19th-century Gothic Revival design, combining ornate cast brass workmanship, gilt surfaces, and semi-precious stone embellishment. More than a functional stationery box, it's a statement piece that immediately sets the tone of any desk or writing space. Its rich Victorian patina, architectural ornamentation and jewel-like cabochons make it a natural focal point, whether displayed on a library side table, a study bureau or within a curated collection of 19th-century decorative objects. Exuding the opulence and craftsmanship of high Victorian luxury, it brings a dramatic, historic presence to any interior while remaining beautifully usable and endlessly evocative of the Gothic taste.
