There are significant portions of this coins obverse and reverse side obscured by the grease, making the date appear as “980” instead of “1980” with the “1” completely missing, next the motto “In God We Trust” appear as “God We Rust”. The reverse side also has major areas obscured such as the entire left sides legend words, such as the words “Quarter Dollar” being completely obscured and missing besides the last two letters “ar” from “Dollar”. The words “United States” are heavily obscured and almost missing as well, from “United States of America”. Lastly, the eagle feathers on the left side of the eagle, as well as the branch and leaves below it are also heavily obscured and somewhat missing due to the heavy grease that this coin was accidentally struck through.
Grease Error Coins are done during the coins minting process, the planchet accidentally had grease on it as the dies struck it. The coin was then unnoticed as such and released to the public, instead of being destroyed due to it being unfit for release.
This Error coin is graded AU55 and certified by ANACS as well.
