James A. Palmer, a historically significant photographer in the post-Civil War South, created a famous series of photographs in 1874 featuring a Black family identified as the "Whitaker family" in Aiken, South Carolina.

These images are historically valuable as early photographic documentation of African American life after the Civil War, and they are avidly collected.

I bought this photo at an antique shop in Charlotte, North Carolina, in the early 1970's.

7 x 4 inches and in good antique condition with light surface wear.
