Tourmaline is a group of crystalline silicate minerals that comes in a wide variety of colors, from pink (rubellite) and green (verdelite) to blue (indicolite) and the rare electric blue of the Paraiba variety. Known for its hardness of 7-7.5 on the Mohs scale, it is ideal for jewelry. Tourmaline can also feature color zoning within a single crystal, as seen in "watermelon" tourmaline with its pink and green layers, and its name comes from the Sinhalese word "tōramalli," meaning "stone with various hues.
