FOXBORO, Massachusetts -- Pop stars Elton John, Sting, Don Henley and other performers staged a $1 million charity concert Monday to benefit the Walden Woods Project, which aims to preserve forest around historic Walden Pond, Massachusetts.
'Walden Woods is a beautiful part of the world and too many beautiful parts of the world are vanishing,' John said during a news conference before he and the other entertainers performed to a sold-out crowd of 50,000 fans at Foxboro Stadium in suburban Boston.
Others particating included Melissa Etheridge, Jimmy Buffett and the rock group Aerosmith.
Henley has worked for three years to preserve the woodland around nearby Walden Pond, where 19th century author Henry David Thoreau lived in a cabin from 1845 to 1847, writing the classic book 'Walden' and essay 'On Civil Disobedience.'
'Walden woods is the birthplace of the modern conservation movement, as well as the peace movement,' Henley said. 'What happened in this little shack (Thoreau's Cabin), this little woodland, had reverberations around the globe.'
