This historically rich lot features six coins from German East Africa, spanning both pre-war and wartime emergency issues. The group includes regular strikes from Hamburg and Berlin, as well as two rare Tabora emergency issues minted under siege conditions during World War I. The 1 Heller 1912-J is struck in bronze at the Hamburg mint and grades Choice AU, showing sharp detail and minimal wear. The 5 Heller 1914-J, in copper-nickel, is VF with some corrosion, typical of circulated colonial issues. The 5 Heller 1916-T is a crude AU brass coin, less than 1mm thick, produced in Tabora during wartime using improvised minting methods. The 10 Heller 1908-J, also copper-nickel, grades XF, with strong strike and light circulation. The 20 Heller 1916-T is another Tabora emergency issue, struck in brass or copper with a thick, uneven flan and crude AU surfaces. Finally, the ¼ Rupie 1909-A, minted in Berlin, is struck in .917 fine silver and grades VF, showing even original toning.
This lot offers a compelling glimpse into German colonial numismatics, especially the rare Tabora issues that reflect the improvisation and resilience of wartime minting. A perfect acquisition for collectors of East African history, emergency coinage, or WWI-era material. Please view the picture below for the actual item you will receive shown exactly in the photo. |
