The JNR ED36 electric locomotive was purchased in 1930 by the Ome Electric Railway, the predecessor of the JNR Ome Line, from the English Electric Company in the United Kingdom.

Although Units #1 and #2 were imported at the same time, they differ slightly in various details. In particular, the number of pocket-type side ventilators on the body is a distinctive feature that distinguishes the two locomotives.
