The Innova Dolphin is a classic oddball from Innova’s 1990s lineup. The mold was PDGA-approved back in 1994, making it one of Innova’s earlier golf discs, and it was designed as a lightweight driver that floats, aimed at players who didn’t want to lose discs on water holes. Over time, it quietly disappeared from regular production and has been OOP for years, which is why you almost never see them in the wild anymore.
Collectors and old-school Innova fans know the Dolphin as a short-lived, niche mold with a bit of cult status – especially in light weights around this 145g range and in specialty plastics or runs like glow, R-Pro, translucent, and odd variants like this sun-reactive color-change plastic. Most of the Dolphins you see today are either in long-time collections or listed as “extremely rare” vintage pieces, and they’re getting harder and harder to track down, especially in this weight class.
If you’re:
Building an Innova / OOP collection,
A fan of floating water-safe discs,
Or just love weird, conversation-starting molds that almost never show up anymore,
…this Dolphin checks all the boxes – plus the UV color-change makes it stand out even more in a display or in the bag.
Flight-wise, the Dolphin was designed as a lightweight, float-in-water driver with enough stability to handle controlled water carries without dumping immediately. In the right hands it can still be a fun thrower for:
Water carries and risky shots where you want the extra security of a floater
Beginner-friendly fairway shots thanks to the lighter weight
Nostalgia rounds if you like throwing true vintage plastic
Most people today, though, will treat this particular disc more as a collector’s piece than an everyday workhorse – especially with the sun-reactive purple color-shift.
I take disc shipping seriously. Your Dolphin will be:
Bagged to protect the stamp and surface
Sandwiched between cardboard backers on both sides
Shipped in a padded mailer
so it arrives safely and ready for your wall, shelf, or bag.
