A must-have for Beatles enthusiasts, the M. Claudel label, is releasing a compilation of Beatles acetate recordings, including some that have never been released before. While there have been many acetate recordings released to date, none have been complete in content, and the sound quality has been several generations old, making it difficult to find a satisfactory title. This release brings together all of these acetate recordings, delivering the ultimate collection in both content and quality.
The unique feature of this release is that it not only compiles acetate recordings, but also includes many never-before-heard takes. This album is sure to be a significant contribution to research into Beatles recordings. While the recordings are from acetate, most of them are half a century old, and some tracks have noticeable stuttering due to the nature of acetate, the recordings are recorded exactly as they were when they were played, without any processing to reduce stuttering, in order to preserve the vividness of the original sound.
Disc 1 features acetate recordings from before their debut through "Help." Pre-debut recordings include "Ain't She Sweet" and "Some Other Guy," as well as a recently unearthed version of "Kansas City," recorded at the Cavern Club, with no overlapping commentary. Two familiar tracks, "Bad To Me" and "One And One Is Two," are unreleased versions that would have been perfect for anthology releases, but they're presented here in their best condition.
The highlights are "All My Loving," "Baby It's You," "Thank You Girl," and "It Won't Be Long." While the take itself is the same as the release version, this is the first time the acetate has been released. The vivid texture of acetate is a direct and tangible part of this album, making it one of its highlights. Also included are the complete film production mixes of "A Hard Days Night" and "Help." It's a blast!
Disc 2 is the album's most substantial offering. This time, it features completely unreleased recordings, the album's biggest highlight. Furthermore, these recordings, from the "Revolver" era, when outtakes were scarce, are a thrilling surprise for enthusiasts. First, "And Your Bird Can Sing #1" features a different guitar take and an unedited ending. As a scrapped track, George's guitar mistakes are clearly noticeable in this first-time recording. Furthermore, "Taxman" also features a different ending from the release take, with an eerie, patchwork-like edit, making this a first-time release that can be heard here. "Tomorrow Never Knows" is also different and longer. Four other tracks, "Doctor Robert," "Eleanor Rigby," and "She Said She Said," are also making their first appearance on acetate. At first glance, they seem identical to the original releases, apart from the vivid sonic texture typical of acetates. However, there may be subtle differences. These differences will be elucidated through further research.
Also included are acetates from the period between "Rubber Soul" and "Magical Mystery Tour." While the Bullet and Scott tapes are primarily early releases, the acetates have a strong presence in the mid-period, which is what makes them so appealing.
Disc 3 features acetates from the period between "Magical Mystery Tour" and "White Album." Kenny Everrett-related acetates are also included. In addition to the familiar "White Album" acetates, this set also includes acetates of Dirty Mac's performances with Rock 'n' Roll Circus. It's fascinating to see that such things were even made.
Disc 4 contains acetates of "Get Back/Let It Be," "Abbey Road," "Mary Jane," and others from the period immediately before the band's breakup. This includes one of the album's highlights, a first appearance of "What's the New Mary Jane," a seven-minute performance recorded on both sides. At this point, acetates also began to feature more stereo recordings.
And finally, Disc 5 features the WBCN broadcast, said to be the inspiration for the Beatles' first bootleg, "Kum Back," complete with the Beatles' performance, station announcements, commercials, and songs by other artists. While the content is well-known and has been included on numerous other releases, there is one difference. It's now an eternal mystery for Beatles enthusiasts, but we hope you'll unravel it.
The latest release from the M. Claudel label is a comprehensive five-disc set that compiles all of The Beatles' acetate recordings. This acetate collection is a must-have for enthusiasts, featuring many never-before-seen recordings, allowing you to hear takes previously only available in literature. This sturdy, permanently pressed vinyl comes with a beautiful picture disc featuring photographs of the original acetates. It also includes a slipcase.
