For sale is a vintage mechanical calculator invented in the USSR under the iconic Original-Odhner brand. This classic rotary pinwheel machine is an excellent example of early-to-mid 20th-century Soviet engineering.

This specific unit is functional and operates via the hand crank and sliders. However, it is missing the front panel, exposing part of the internal mechanism. It’s perfect for restoration, use as a prop, or for those who appreciate visible mechanical design.

🛠️ Condition:

• ✅ mostly working: crank, number wheels, and sliders operate smoothly

• ⚠️ Missing front panel and hard to press buttons that move module left and right (see photos)

• Moderate wear, patina, surface rust – consistent with age

• A raw, authentic industrial appearance

• Excellent as a project, visual teaching tool, or display prop

📜 Background:

The Odhner calculator was invented in Russia in the 1870s by Willgodt Theophil Odhner, a Swedish engineer working in St. Petersburg. He developed the pinwheel mechanism that would define mechanical calculators for decades. Early production began in Russia under his supervision.

After the Russian Revolution, the original Russian Odhner factory was nationalized by the Soviet state and continued production under state control. Simultaneously, Odhner’s family and business partners moved manufacturing to Sweden, where production continued in Gothenburg (Göteborg) under the “Original-Odhner” name.

As a result, two lines of Odhner calculators existed:

• Soviet-made models (often used in state offices and institutions),

• and Swedish-made units, known for their build quality and design consistency.

Both versions are now prized by collectors and historians for their role in the pre-digital computing revolution.
