The N54 engine relies on a single serpentine belt to power the alternator, power steering pump, and A/C compressor. 
If this belt fails, the vehicle becomes inoperable.
A known weakness is the factory plastic power steering pulley, which is prone to cracking or contacting the subframe. 
This can cause the belt to derail--and if the engine is run without the belt, it may be drawn into the engine itself, resulting in severe damage.
