Amethyst is a variety of Quartz, which is, chemically, silicon dioxide (SiO2). Amethyst owes its violet colour to some pretty interesting chemistry: impurities of ferric iron (Fe3+) and in some cases other transition metals, which results in complex crystal lattice substitutions.
