Lovely Vintage Wood Carved Rosewood Amitabha Buddha
This is a spectacular hand carved Buddha in a natural reddish
wood likely rosewood or mahogany. We purchased this wonderful
Buddha in a small dusty antique shop with one light bulb in Canton China
around 1990. There were dozens of small stall shops mostly selling jade
in several intersecting alley ways. Except for the few light bulbs it could
have been right out of a back alley marketplace in the Middle Ages.
For those familiar with Guangzhou this would be the old jade market.
2 3/4” d x 3 1/2” w x 8 1/8” Tall
The Buddha’s hands are placed in the dhyana mudra (meditation gesture),
with both palms facing upward and resting in the lap, the right hand over the left
signifying inner balance, contemplation, and enlightenment. The robe is draped in smooth,
flowing folds, covering both shoulders and falling symmetrically, giving the figure a serene and
harmonious appearance. The face is calm and meditative, with downcast eyes suggesting
inward focus and spiritual reflection.
