Live at Civic Centre, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, April 14, 1970. Truly Perfect Sound.
UPGRADE!!! ★The content and sound quality are amazing!! Amazing!
During ZEP's first US tour in 1970, the Ottawa performance on April 14th is perhaps the most worthy live recording to be called a "hidden gem." Due to its incomplete recording, few items have been released, and it's often overlooked by non-enthusiasts. However, the recording itself is a very easy-to-listen-to audience recording, making it a truly hidden gem from the 1970s.
I remember fondly the initial release of this recording, which became a hot topic due to its ease of listening. This was the 5-CD set "The Trademark of Quality Masters Volume One" box set. It was the first time it was released, and the excellent sound quality made a big impact on enthusiasts.
The tracklist for the TMOQ Box version was also swapped out at the time of release, and it was refreshing to see the opening begin with Jimmy's delayed echo intro to "Heartbreaker." While many items have now been released, and this unique intro is clearly a unique attempt at this tour, it was quite a surprise at the time.
Since then, not many items have been released, and as a result, it has become positioned as the now-overlooked first American tour sound source of the 1970s. However, even listening to it again, the sound quality is surprisingly good. In particular, the sound images of "Dazed And Confused" and "Whole Lotta Love" are so close that it's easy to mistake them for soundboards broadcast on AM radio. And yet, the quiet surroundings also contribute to the ease of listening. It's no wonder that this live performance in the TMOQ Box was named "Parliament Hill," a parody of Blueberry Hill.
Needless to say, it was GRAF ZEPPELIN who carefully recorded this hidden gem after reviewing the master recording. The difference in sound quality is clear compared to previous items, and compared to this version, the TMOQ box and the most recent items, "JUST THE CROWD AND...," which recorded in the correct track order, were generally in a state of gene-drop via analog dubbing. While those items were easy to listen to, this impressive upgrade truly removes the muddiness and film of the sound.
There's no distortion or low-frequency noise that resulted from the gene-drop of previous items. While the recordings were originally surprisingly easy to listen to, a considerable amount of time has passed since the previous release, and most enthusiasts will be surprised by how easy they are to listen to with this release.
In the US in the spring of 1970, there was a classic soundboard called "Pb" from Vancouver on the first day of the tour, but Ottawa was recorded at the end of the tour, with an audience so good that it could be mistaken for a radio broadcast, and since it was a live performance in the same Canada, it makes a wonderful pair with "Pb."
The bonus recording includes a recently unearthed recording of the Helsinki performance from the same year. As you may know, the definitive "TOCCATA AND FUGUE: HELSINKI 1970," supervised by "GRAF ZEPPELIN," is still fresh in our minds today, but the recording included here is from a completely different audience. This is a distant sound image, but compared to that, Jimmy's extreme balance is surprisingly easy to hear. Moreover, it's so fresh that it's a shame that only two songs can be heard (these are probably all that remain).
The 1970 Ottawa recording, which captured the experimental period, including the intro to "Heartbreaker," with a very good sound image, is a surprising upgrade. With such clean and clear sound quality, even non-enthusiasts should be able to enjoy it. The literally overlooked 1970 American tour's elite audience has been reborn by "GRAF ZEPPELIN." Seeing is believing!
REMASTERED BY GRAF ZEPPELIN
★ A newly remastered digital copy from the master!
This latest remaster has been deliberately avoided for mono. It has a pseudo-stereo-esque quality, but differentiates it from previously released tracks.
★ Bonus features two tracks from the recent debut of the Helsinki concert!
While this is a debut release, it only features two tracks ("Thank You" splits the organ solo into three tracks, effectively making it three tracks).
While these are the only two tracks available at present, these are rare, first-time recordings!
★ The release will include a numbered sticker.
