In the Imperial Japanese Navy prewar coastal defense ships were as their name suggests large retired vessels tasked with coastal defense and other duties. The Shimushu-class built just before the Pacific War was no exception with its primary purpose being to protect northern fishing waters. However as war approached a large number of escort vessels were needed to protect transport ships navigating sea lanes from enemy submarines and other threats. The Etorofu-class was built with enhanced anti-submarine capabilities based on the Shimushu-class. The Mikura-class improved the Etorofu-class's anti-submarine capabilities and also added anti-aircraft capabilities. The Ukuru-class also appeared with a simplified Mikura-class design for greater mass production. The Hiburi-class was built as a coastal defense ship with the Ukuru-class hull and Mikura-class armament. Initially the Shimushu and Etorofu classes were called Type A while the Mikura Ukuru and Hiburi classes were called Type B but later all were classified as Type A. The Type A coastal defense ships were small vessels weighing less than 1000 tons but the Mikura Ukuru and Hiburi classes possessed anti-submarine and anti-aircraft capabilities superior to those of destroyers and served as the main force in maritime escort battles in the latter half of the war fighting faithfully like sheepdogs protecting a flock of sheep. This special feature will take a multifaceted look at these coastal defense ships bearing the "island names" of Japan covering their construction history mechanisms differences between each type tactics and combat history. ●Second Feature: The Watchword is "Freedom"! The Siege of Korsun-Cherkasy As a result of successive Soviet offensives on the Eastern Front from late 1943 to early 1944 a total of approximately 60000 German troops from the 42nd and 11th Corps were left as a salient near Korsun west of Cherkasy. Soviet Marshal Zhukov aimed to encircle and destroy this salient ordering the 1st and 2nd Ukrainian Fronts to encircle it from both flanks. By the end of January the Korsun encirclement had been formed. German Field Marshal Manstein assembled a powerful panzer force and launched a breakthrough operation to rescue the Stemmermann Group a friendly force trapped within the encirclement. The 47th Panzer Corps attacked from the south but was repelled. The 3rd Panzer Corps led by the Beke Heavy Tank Regiment and equipped with Tiger and Panther tanks then advanced from the southwest. Despite the Soviet counterattack about 40000 people managed to escape but 20000 soldiers and all their heavy equipment were lost. This special feature will cover the clash between the elite armored units of the Soviet and German armies over the encirclement of Korsun one of the most dramatic battles on the Eastern Front.
