Ōjōyōshū

INTRODUCTION:

The book ”Ōjō yōshū” was written by Genshin in 985 AD, is a Buddhist book that compiles important passages from many Buddhist scriptures from the perspective of Jodokyo on the subject of rebirth in Gokurakujōdo (=the Buddhists' Pure Land).  It is describing the Rokudō (Buddhist hell)  and Gokurakujōdo, and explaining how to escape from hell and live in the Pure LandIn other words, it was a book about how to end one's life in order to have a good afterlife in the Heian period.

The original version of “Daijō Yōshū” was written in 80,000 Chinese characters and consists of ten chapters divided into three volumes, written in classical Chinese prose. (The item for sale is a later edition with illustrations, written in modern Japanese. It was published in 1921. Note that while the original edition consists of ten chapters, this edition has been subdivided into 25 chapters.)

Genshin taught people that in order to avoid suffering after death, they should be reborn in the Pure Land where Amida Buddha resides. He also preached the method of "kansō nembutsu," an image training in which one visualizes Amida Buddha and many bodhisattvas coming from he Pure Land to welcome one to the afterlife.

After Ōjō yōshū was written, Japanese Buddhism and Buddhist art developed greatly. It is said that the many masterpieces created from the Heian to Kamakura periods, such as the Rokudō-e paintings that convey the horror of hell and the Amida Shoju Raigō-zu paintings, were created under the influence of this book.

In addition to this book, we also sell other books related to Genshin and hell paintings.
