Enter the world of Midnight's Daughter, Nellie Pruitt. Her earliest memory was of her father being lynched by a gang of redneck whites. As a teenager she was forced into marriage with an older black clergyman. That union produced her only son, who was soon to be denied her when she fled her marriage convinced she had murdered her husband. Her life took a new and curious twist when she arrived in the Northern city of Detroit and became a prostitute, ultimately winding up in prison for a long term after killing a man in revenge for the death of her pimp.

Despite the curves life threw her, Nellie's one overriding goal in life was to find her long lost son. When she finally did, fate played its last trick on her.
