VHS side works 100%

DVD side won't show on the TV despite everything sounding like it was working (spins up, laser is moving). It tries and then shows a screen that says the disc in unreadable.

I should note that I only have one DVD to use for testing and it's "The Matrix". It's an officially released DVD but it says on the back it's "Double Layered". Maybe this player doesn't support that? Anyway, unit is priced as though DVD side doesn't work.

DVD tray moves fine. DVD side shows the home screen (default screen with no disc inside).

Buttons all work.

No remote.
