This folk art item is a traditional vintage Balinese Lime Gourd container with lid. These were created to carry lime that was later mixed together with betel nut and chewed to combat fatigue and other uses. The betel chew is a mild stimulant, and consists of the seed of the areca palm (the betel nut), the fruit of leaft of the betel pepper vine, and mineral lime. These containers were created near the regency of Klungkung, and were hand-painted by a good Kamasan artistan. The traditional Kamasan painting style takes a long time to paint because of intense details, and creates a one of a kind, unique art piece. The Gourd designs represent shadow puppets or 'Wayang Kulit' and scenes of the Ramayana tales and Mahabaratha epics in the very old tradition of Kamasan style which originated within the Java Royal courts of past centuries. The gourd is painted all around, and the bottom also is, which has a large red face to worn off evil.

This is a vintage folk art piece ~ a BALINESE 'KAMASAN' STYLE HAND PAINTED LIDDED COCONUT SHELL WITH RAMAYANA SCENES. It measures approximately 4.5" wide x 3.5" high (5" with lid) and weighs about  4.9 oz. prior to packing for shipment. It is in good/very good pre-owned condition.
