Standing Yakushi Nyorai

A standing statue of Yakushi Nyorai.

It can be said to be an excellent example of a local Buddha. Judging from the shape of the boat-shaped halo, this work is likely to date to the early Edo period.

Yakushi Nyorai holds a medicine jar in one hand, but this statue is very rare, holding the medicine jar with both hands. Originally, a standing Yakushi Nyorai statue holds a medicine jar in its left hand, slightly raised, and its right hand is in a mudra called 'Semui', which is a hand shape. 'Semui' is a gesture of raising the hand with the palm facing forward, encouraging the people by saying 'There is no need to be afraid.'

This statue holds a medicine jar with both hands lowered, so there may be a Yakushi Nyorai statue somewhere that can serve as the subject, but this is a very rare Yakushi Nyorai statue.

It was probably worshiped by people as a small Yakushi hall in the past or as a guardian Buddha of an old family. There are many local Buddha statues like this one all over Japan, but this one is in very good condition and is a very impressive statue.
