Shimokitayama Village is a small village with a population of less than 900 (as of July 1, 2019) located in the southernmost part of Nara Prefecture. Surrounded by mountains on all sides, to the west is the 1300-year-old World Heritage Site of Omine Okugakemichi, and the Maegi area, the heart of the trail, is a mysterious sacred place where legends remain. About half of the village is designated as Yoshino-Kumano National Park, and the rich natural environment is an attractive feature of the village.
