The word suzani comes from the Persian "suzan." SuSuzani textiles were thought to have originated near Uzbekistan, however there are certain parts of Central Asia where the textiles were also created. Suzani fabric originated in the area found along the Silk Road. This region connected China, Turkey, and Europe with the Middle Eastern world. The Central Asian region is known for producing textiles that coincided
with the nomadic culture of the countries of Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
zan is translated in English as "needle." A similar type of textile
art made in Iran is called suzandozi in Persian, which translates to "needlework."
Suzani is decorative embroidery. A person draws by hand a pattern on fabric. A person, usually a woman hand stitches over that pattern. She uses a stitch similar to a satin stitch and may use various other stitches to achieve a border. Some choose not to use the satin stitch but use a needle punch. Regardless of the stitch type they are all done by hand. Patterns and fabric backgrounds can vary by region.
