Abe Lincoln Grows Up by Carl Sandburg Hard Cover 1938
Carl Sandburg: When I began writing Abraham Lincoln: The Prairie Years I had young people in mind. It seemed to me that Lincoln was a great companion and a beautiful neighbor who should be known to boys and girls as a living friend. I hoped he would be so real and alive that sometimes while reading about him, young men and women might say in Kentucky and pioneer lingo, " Why! I feel as if I knowed him myself ! " . . . If this aim of mine has been realized in part for some of the youth who read this book, I shall be thankful and feel that we are good friends.
