Title: MYSTERIUM MAGNUM; oder, Erklarun uber das erste Buch Mosis. Jacob Bohme's Sammtliche Werke, Funfter Band
Publication: Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1843
Edition: First Edition
Description: Paperback. First Printing of the Schweiber edition. 8vo, viii, 704pp. + 1 B/W plate, a lithographic reproduction of Bohme's own drawings from the 1682 Amsterdam edition. Uncut and never bound, in original publisher's wrappers. Pen and colored pencil underlining to just a couple of pages, trivial foxing, else entirely clean and fresh, a very uncommon survival as issued straight from the publisher. 'Mysterium Magnum is an exposition on Genesis in terms of B.'s mystical system, with regard to both personal and cosmic dimentions. Alchemical terms permit reference to both realms simultaneously; nature is humanized, and the human is refined through spiritual alchemy. Lucifer's rebellion is representated as a psychological aberration within the first two principles, while the fall of humankind is represented as a physiological and alchemical allegory that takes place initially inside an androgynous Adam. Bohm makes extensive use of numerical patterning and of word mysticism: every speech-act represents the 'speaking forth' of divine principles.' (Nigel Smith in Hayes' Dictionary of Biblical Interpretation). VERY GOOD.
