Framed & Glazed Watercolour Of MOUSEHOLE HARBOR T.H Victor (W.Sands 1894-1980)

Mousehole:

“The loveliest village in

England” – Dylan Thomas.

Mousehole (pronounced Mowzel) is a small fishing village situated just over three miles south of Penzance. It was once a busy harbour, famous for landing huge catches of Pilchards. The village has kept much of its historic character and today is very popular with visitors during the summer.

The Solomon Browne Memorial Hall is a renovated old Net Loft in the heart of the village. It is a central point for the community to meet, learn about our unique heritage here in Mousehole, and take part in the many events

The Mousehole Christmas Lights are famous throughout Cornwall and beyond and are put up (and taken down) each year by a dedicated team of volunteers. Tom Bawcock’s Eve (23 December) is always celebrated with great enthusiasm in the village; it celebrates the efforts of Tom Bawcock, the legendary Mousehole fisherman, who is said to have saved the villagers from starvation by going out in a severe storm to fish.

Thomas Herbert Victor (British 1894 -1980) was born in Mousehole in Cornwall, and lived his life there, never venturing further than Truro in his life. He went to art school in Penzance and spent his life painting watercolour scenes of Mousehole, Newlyn, Penzance and The Lizard Peninsular. He became one of the foremost Cornish watercolour artists of the mid-20th century. He also painted under the pseudonym W. Sands. His watercolour paintings of the harbours and streets of all the local fishing villages, apart from their artistic merit, are of great historic value as a record of how West Cornwall looked, 100 years ago.
