Export Lacquer: Reflection of the West in Black and Gold Makie

INTRODUCTION:

This Catalogue was published on the occasion of the exhibition as

"Export Lacquer: Reflection of the West in Black and Gold Makie

18 October- 7 December, 2008 / Kyoto National Museum

23 December, 2008- 26 January, 2009 / Suntory Museum of Art

Makie is a distinctive Japanese decorative technique in which  designs are first drawn onto a lacquered surface with urushi sap and then sprinkled with gold and silver powder before the urushi dries. The history of this technique dates to the Heian period (794-1185).

Europeans who came to Japan during the Momoyama period (1573-1615) marveled at the beauty of lacquerware using makie techniques and brought large quantities of Makie to their home countries. Since then, Makie continued to be exported in large quantities as luxury items to Europe and other Asian countries. These  extravagant crafts were symbols of wealth and power, and European royalty and nobility, including Marie Antoinette and August the Strong, competed to collect them and decorate their palaces.

This large-scale exhibition traces the exported Makie and related documents, and introduced the unknown history of Makie. The exhibition featured about 280 pieces of Makie and related materials, including items from the former collection of Marie Antoinette, valuable collections of palaces and royal families throughout Europe, and excellent works in Japan.

Comments from us

The history of Makie as an export item is new even to us Japanese. The book introduces how Makie was discovered and loved by people overseas and the distribution of Makie reflecting the national power at that time with clear writing. In addition, this book contains many beautiful plates, we highly recommended. In particular,  we are impressed by the beauty and loveliness of the former collection of Marie-Antoinette and the collection of the Guimet Museum.
