Original publishing soft cover. Complete copy. Very Fine condition, clean book, partially uncut
(from the 25th to the last page) and unread copy, rare fox stains (old time oxidation of paper), slight abrasions
of the cover, a few small tears on the edges, traces of time (see pictures).
NB! Please note that the book is really old, which printed 104 years ago, but not modern reprint or more late re-edition.
Книга рассказывает о бесправном положении евреев в Российской империи. Происходящие действия
перенесены в Гренаду, в середину XIV века. Пьеса написана автором в Италии (где он жил с 1907 по 1909 гг)
в 1908 г. В Википедии указано годом написания или издания этой пьесы-сказки - 1914 г. Одни утверждают,
что именно это первое издание. В любом случае издание противоречивое.
От себя дабавлю, что это так называемое "окопное" издание, которые печатали на газетной бумаге, на самокрутку
для солдат в окопах, которые на досуге, между боями, должны были читать такие книги. Безспорным лидером
таких изданий был Демьян Бедный, произведения которого печатали сто тысячными тиражами.
Кресьтянско-рабочая Росиия времён Гражданской Войны была на 95% безграмотной, поэтому любой тираж
такой книжки привышал численность умеющих читать солдат многократно. Выривали страницу, делили пополам,
скручивали в трубочку, набивали махоркой и в перёд с дымком... вот и всё чиение.
Тираж книги не указан, что для советского времени странно. И воовще, зачем нужно было издавать это,
довольно аллегорическое, труднодоступное для народа творение, остаётся загадкой...
The book tells about the disempowerment of Jews in the Russian Empire. The ongoing action was transferred to Grenada,
in the middle of the XIV century. The play was written by the author in Italy in 1908. Wikipedia indicates the year of writing
or publication of this play-tale - 1914. Some argue that this is the first edition. In any case, the publication is controversial.
I’ll add from myself that this is the so-called “trench” edition, which was printed on newsprint, on a self-rolled cigarette
for soldiers in the trenches who, in their spare time, between fights, should have read such books. The undisputed leader
of such publications was Demyan Bednyi, whose works were printed in one hundred thousandth edition.
The Farmer-Workers Russia of the Civil War was 95% illiterate, so any circulation of such a book exceeded
the number of soldiers who can read many times. They shaved the page, divided it in half, twisted it into a tube,
stuffed it with tobacco and in go with a smoke ... that's all.
The circulation of the book is not indicated, which is strange for the Soviet era. And in general, why it was necessary to
publish this rather allegorical creation, hard to reach for the people, will remain a mystery ...
Давид Яковлевич Айзман (1869 - 1922) - русско-еврейский прозаик и драматург.
С конца 1880-х годов печатал очерки и рассказы в газете «Южанин» и «Одесском вестнике». Подлинным дебютом
считал очерк «Немножечко в сторону» («Русское богатство», 1901, № 5) о судьбе типичного еврейского идеалиста.
Первый сборник «Чёрные дни» вышел в 1904 году (издательство «Русское богатство», СПб.).
В период 1905—1907 годов примыкал к писателям-реалистам, связанным со сборниками «Знание».
Часто обращался к общерусской, нееврейской тематике. Однако внимание Айзмана привлекала прежде всего
еврейская среда; его повести и рассказы: «Ледоход», «Чёрные дни» (1904), «Кровавый разлив» (1908),
«Враги», «Светлый бог» и другие - беллетристическая интерпретация так называемого «еврейского вопроса»
(бесправное положение евреев в Российской империи, их взаимоотношения с окружающим населением и т. д.),
выдержанная в либерально-народническом духе.
Обычный герой его произведений - ассимилированный еврей-интеллигент в непростых отношениях и
с еврейской, и с русской средой. Специфически айзмановским считается характерный образ русского еврея
в эмиграции, страдающего от ностальгии и мечтающего о возвращении на родину.
Айзман по ряду признаков был близок к группе писателей (самым ярким её представителем является
С. Юшкевич), которая разрабатывала условный «русско-еврейский» стиль, стремясь оттенить строй еврейской речи.
Он мастерски воспроизводил русскую речь полуобразованного, ещё не вполне освоившегося в русской языковой
среде еврея. Критики называли Айзмана «специалистом по еврейскому вопросу» и «еврейским Чеховым».
Автор трагедии «Терновый куст» (1905), пьесы «Жёны» (1906), пьесы-сказки «Светлый бог» (1914),
комедии «Консул Гранат» (1923).
David Aizman (1869 - 1922) - Russian-Jewish prose writer and playwright.
Since the late 1880s he has been publishing essays and short stories in the newspaper Yuzhanin and Odessa Herald.
The essay “A little bit to the side” (“Russian Wealth”, 1901, No. 5) on the fate of a typical Jewish idealist considered
his true debut. The first collection of “Black Days” was published in 1904 (publishing house “Russian wealth”, St. Petersburg).
In the period 1905-1907 he joined the realist writers associated with the collections of “Knowledge”. Often turned to
all-Russian, non-Jewish topics. However, the attention of Isman was attracted primarily by the Jewish environment;
his tales and stories: “Ice drift”, “Black Days” (1904), “Blood Spill” (1908), “Enemies”, “Bright God” and others -
a fiction interpretation of the so-called “Jewish question” (Jewish rights in Russia empires, their relations
with the surrounding population, etc.), sustained in a liberal-populist spirit.
The usual hero of his works is an assimilated Jewish intellectual in difficult relations with both the Jewish and
Russian circles. Especially Aizman is considered the characteristic image of a Russian Jew in exile,
suffering from nostalgia and dreaming of returning to his homeland.
Aizman was close to a group of writers on a number of grounds (its most prominent representative was S. Yushkevich),
which developed a conditional “Russian-Jewish” style, trying to overshadow the structure of Jewish speech.
He masterfully reproduced the Russian language of a semi-educated Jew who had not yet fully mastered the Russian language
environment. Critics called Isman a “Jewish specialist” and “Jewish Chekhov.”
The author of the tragedy "The Thorns Bush" (1905), the play "Wives" (1906), the play-fairy tale "Bright God" (1914),
the comedy "Consul Pomegranate" (1923).
