The C57s were used mainly as passenger locomotives, hauling passenger services around most of the country with the exception of Shikoku; some were exported to Taiwan. The locomotives were retired in 1975. 32 C57s are preserved around Japan, while another is preserved in Taiwan. 2 of the 32 C57s in Japan, C57 1 and C57 180, are preserved in working order. The only surviving C57 in Taiwan, CT273 (formerly known as C57 3), is also preserved in working order. The locomotives earned the nickname of "Lady" due to various reasons and is popularly known as Shigonana (C57 in Japanese) among railfans.
