Watercolor painting of what appears to be perhaps beach grasses bending in the wind, birds overhead, 15" by 22" (25 1/2" by 31 1/2" framed), signed at lower right by well listed California artist DOUGLASS EWELL PARSHALL (1899-1990). Parshall was born in New York City and by the age of 15 was already exhibiting at the National Academy; he was ultimately made a full academician. He also studied at the Art Students League, at the Boston Museum School, and under his artist father, DeWitt Parshall. By 1917 the younger Parshall was in Santa Barbara, where he settled in for many years of artistic production in watercolor and oil. At auction, works have gone into mid five figures. This piece has considerable foxing within the image area, as photos indicate. An old label, written in the artist's hand, gives his name and titles which do not match the subject matter: "Olive Trees #2" (crossed out) and then "Stooping Figure"; board must have been recycled from another of the artist's works. The watercolor is slipping around loose under the mat.
