This decorative, complex gouache drawing appears to be possibly a wallpaper design of the Art Deco period, or, it could just be a drawing in its own right. On the reverse is written the name "T.M. Abell". The eye-teasing geometric design seems to vibrate almost in the way that Op-Art of later decades vibrates and challenges the eye. Colors are greens, oranges and yellows, with white and black lightning-bolt type diagonal borders making for a most dramatic pattern. Googling the name written on the reverse reveals the name of a prominent greater Los Angeles area mid-century residential architect, THORNTON MONTAIGNE ABELL, and this was found in Los Angeles, but it is difficult to speculate further on its creator. Bauhaus designs of Moholy-Nagy and others of that school and period can somewhat resemble this. The drawing when viewed up very close has some imperfections especially at lower center and lower right, but these paint losses, commonly seen in gouache paintings as they age, are more than minimized by the energetic design. This is a most unusual work. Black frame is modern. Measurements as framed 17" by 21 1/4".
