1647 Life of Pope Pius V Catholic
Battle of Lepanto Ottoman Empire TURKS Catena
Pius V served as pope in the second half of the 16th-century.
His papacy is best-remembered for his role in the Council of Trent as well as
helping establish standards for the Roman Rite. However, author Girolamo Catena
in his biography of Pius V, focuses on other events that shaped the Catholic
Church including, most notably, Pius V and the Holy Leaves defeat over the
Ottoman Empire at the Battle of Lepanto. Catena includes the names of both
Christian and Turkish officers involved in the war as well as the names of
galleys used in the battle. This 1647 Rome edition includes numerous letters
and correspondence between Pius V, nobility, and other heads of state.
