Poster from the year 1981 for the exhibit "In + Out City Limits: Boston" exhibition of photos by the famous, important contemporary American artist ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG (1925-2008), **hand signed** in red marker at lower left. The poster measures 25 1/2" by 19 1/2" (33" by 26 1/2" framed--NO GLASS). Rauschenberg, according to the askart listing, is "one of the major artists of his generation, credited with Jasper Johns of breaking the stronghold of Abstract Expressionism". He is known for his assemblage, conceptualist methods, printmaking, experimentation with untraditional materials. Rauschenberg anticipated Pop Art, Conceptualism and Minimalism. He studied at the Kansas City Art Institute in the late 1940's, and at Black Mountain College in North Carolina under Josef and Anni Albers. Further training at the Art Students League followed, under Morris Kantor and Vaclav Vytlacil. The importance of Rauschenberg's contribution to modern art is reflected in the prices his paintings and sculptures achieve at major auction----a number of pieces have exceeded $10 million, and many have sold in the millions. This poster shows its original folds but is otherwise in solid condition, despite having traveled without glass. The frame is attractive and in good condition. Re-glaze or frame with Plexi for protection. One of the more affordable works associated with the artist.
