"Doctor José Osório started writing this Memoir in the second half of 1973. Who insistently suggested it was my sister Marietta, fearful that so many interesting stories he told us would be lost in time.

He didn't just rely on memory. She rummaged through old files and documented her accounts as best she could.

He sensed the approach of death and faced it gallantly. In fact, he used to say: "I want to see if I can do like my father, who knew how to play with death". His personality was well portrayed by his son-in-law Plínio de Arruda Sampaio, in a speech given recently at the Municipality of São João:

"... the late Dr. José Osório, an illustrious sanjoanense, who taught me how a person can be cordial, cheerful, good-humored, cultured, tolerant and understanding, within the strictest rectitude of conduct and the greatest firmness of principles, without any affectation."
