Jean Joseph Marie Gabriel de Lattre de Tassigny was a WWI hero at Verdun and in 1940 was the youngest French General.  He was arrested by the Germans in 1942 but escaped.

He accepted the German surrender on 8 May 1945 alongside Generals Eisenhower, Montgomery and Zhukov.

He was the only French commander of significant numbers of US forces during WWII.

He went on to serve as Commander in Chief in Indochina.  At his funeral in 1952 he was promoted to Marshal of France, head of all uniformed services.
