The natural lustre of nacre within the phragmacone (shell) creates the marvellous iridescence, the chambers of the fossil shell filled with quartz minerals. Madagascar is one of the best locations to gain colourful ammonites with incredible natural preservation with beautiful minerals, and this example is no exception to that discernment. The Cleoniceras ammonites from Madagascar are particularly varied, the depositions of fossil beds have a unique quality.
Rare colours found in specimens are maize yellow, amber, blue, glaucous, cerulean, purple, lavender, scarlet red, coral pink and lavender-pink. The ammolite ammonites from Madagascar are of a similar quality to the Canadian ammolite fossils. However, where the Canadian ammolite is not as stable and often coated with resin or lacquer type preservatives.
This particular specimen from Madagascar has been polished by hand on a polishing wheel. Creating a hard natural quartz surface, honed and very tactile to touch. Many colours can be viewed in good examples, this play of light, a refraction of natural light through layers of aragonite within the fossilised shell.
