Coming to Puget Sound in 1875, Mr. Mutty's (1848 - 1929) first activity was working in a saw mill on Discovery Bay. His first enterprise in Port Townsend was in the hay and grain business on what was known as the Mutty dock, at the foot of Polk Street. He was engaged in business for about ten years and then in partnership with C. I. Wanamaker, did business in groceries under the name of the Wanamaker-Mutty Grocery company. It was about this time that he served in the State Legislature. About twenty years ago he formed a partnership with Sanford Lake and C. I. Wanamaker and purchased the present Port Townsend Dry Goods Company. He was active in the development of that business until about ten years ago when the growing infirmities of old age forced his retirement from the field of active business.
