Johann Sebastian Bach Born March 21, 1685, in Eisenach, Germany. Died July 28, 1750, in Leipzig. Bach came from a long line of town musicians and organists. Orphaned at the age of 10, he went to live with an older brother who gave him his first organ lessons. At 15 he won a scholarship to study music at Luneberg, where he came under the influence of the eminent organist Georg Bohm. During this period he studied, copied, arranged and reworked the styles and techniques of as many different composers as he could. He also damaged his eyes permanently - copying by moonlight the manuscripts of forbidden "radical" composers. In his adult years, as his fame as an organist grew, Bach held a number of important church and court posts in Germany and composed numerous organ, orchestral and choral works as part of his official duties.
After his death, most of these works lay neglected until Felix Mendelssohn, the composer-conductor, discovered the manuscript of the St. Matthew Passion and created a sensation when he conducted it in Leipzig in 1829. Over the following decade, other works were uncovered, and in 1850 - 100 years after Bach's death - a society was formed to publish all his works for the first time. They have since been recognized as those of an unsurpassed master of the grand "architectural" design of Baroque music, with a maturity and depth of expression unequalled by his predecessors.
