1940 Indian Four Cylinder

850-384-8105 for questions!

Motor: 77 cubic inch inline-four offering 1265CC.

Rarer Kilometer used Speedometer shows 494 Km, NOT miles.  Kilometer speedometers were created in 1939 for French/Army contracts and the Model 340 variant initially, progressing in to international orders, export markets, or special military/police requisitions active around 1940.

A non-numbers matching Four, anyone can argue as to why or when the motor was swapped but probably “back in the day” when no one cared about matching, the 440 vs 441 motor was found and/or installed. It has no background history but with no cracks or welds and the fact that when it was started, oil pressure was 50 psi and steady or that the clutch operated fine means it was probably rebuilt. I have no records to verify this!

This Four sat idle for years, part of a 100+ vehicle collection. Maintained but not operated, during my ownership a rebuild was done of the (1) gas tanks & (2) Magneto

The 440, registered by the Engine Vin vs the frame, had various 1941 items from the handlebar internals & grips or location of the tool box that in turn are corrected to 1940.

Replaced or new have been: (1) Carburetor/CAD gas line/gas tank washers/petcocks, (2) Spark plugs/wires/boots/contact ends/black wire casing cover, (3) Handlebar sleeves and grips, (4) SST Fuse block, (5) Ignition Switch, (6) Battery Box & Battery (new not installed currently), (7) Indian Face horn, (8) Internal cables for carb/magneto in handlebars, (9) Front Fender & Sidecar Fender lamp, (10) Defender bumper on rear fender, (11) Sidecar windshield hardware and windshield, (12) Sidecar tub cover, (13) Magneto Cap & Rotor.

Started for the first time late September 2025 during my ownership & possibly the first time in over 15 years due to the frame mounted registration sticker (now removed but have a photo of) and condition of the tanks and magneto, oil pressure rose to 50 psi with no smoke or leakage! Not run on any city street at that time.

On to the August 2026 Indian Four rally at Tiffin when it was started and driven for my first time in 3 years.

Full documentation of what has been done since 2022 would be included.
